On the Linux console, you can ping Bluetooth devices using the l2ping <btmac> command. Example:

l2ping 00:11:22:33:44:55

The l2ping command uses the Echo signalling command code (0x08 and 0x09) of the L2CAP layer of the Bluetooth stack.
